Director of Laboratory Safety

George Mason University's Environmental Health and Safety Office is seeking a Director of Laboratory Safety to oversee and manage comprehensive programs in biosafety (BSL 2/3), chemical safety, and radiation safety (e.g., radioactive materials, x-ray-producing instruments, lasers, NMR, MRI).
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's of science in biohazard science, microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry or a related field is required (Master's or Ph.D. in the above is preferred);
- At least two years experience in laboratory safety field with hands-on experience with hazardous materials, BSL-3 operations, risk assessment and radiation safety; plus 3 years experience managing health and safety programs and health and safety personnel/staff;
- Reside no more than 20 miles from the Prince William campus (Manassas, Va.); and
- Must be able to meet medical surveillance requirements to include being fit to wear a respirator and receiving required vaccinations.
The selected candidate must successfully complete a comprehensive background check; financial check; and medical evaluation to include being fit to wear a respirator, receiving required vaccinations and a drug screening. Associate Biological Safety Officer (Program Consultant)

The Environmental Health and Safety Office is seeking an individual to serve as the University's Associate Biosafety Officer by assisting with the administration and management of a comprehensive institutional biosafety program. Duties include: evaluate research projects involving human and animal pathogens, biological toxins, CDC select agents, rDNA, and transgenic animals; maintain bloodborne pathogen exposure control program; inspect/audit research areas; advise on biosafety practices, containment levels, and waste disposal practices; oversee OSHA-related biological issues on campus; and serve on emergency response resource group for biological materials.
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in microbiology, virology, molecular biology/genetics, or related biological sciences, or equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible work experience.
- 5 years experience in biomedical research with projects involving human and animal pathogens, toxins, select agents, and recombinant DNA.
- Experience with biosafety regulations and consensus standards, experience with BSL2 or higher lab practices; experience with developing educational programs.
- Successful completion of a DOJ background check (security risk assessment).
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment and respiratory protection.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or professional degree in microbiology, virology, molecular biology/genetics or veterinary medicine.
- Experience with recombinant DNA, pathogenic organisms, BSL3 biocontainment, and shipping biological materials.
- Knowledge of University policies, procedures and regulations.

The successful candidate will assist the Biosafety Manager to review conceptual designs and engineering drawings for the construction of the new lab, and develop and implement commissioning plans and thereafter for the daily monitoring and maintenance of the BSL3 lab. He/ She is expected to perform regular safety and security risk assessments of existing equipment as well as servicing and maintaining the facility and its equipment to ensure minimal downtime.
Qualifications:
- An Engineering Degree with minimum 5 years experience
- Experience in the design and /or operation of biocontainment laboratories will be an advantage
- Strong written, analytical, interpersonal and presentation skills
- Able to work well in a diverse team environment

ASSISTANT BIOSAFETY OFFICER, Environment, Health and Safety Office (EHS)-Biosafety Program (BSP), to join a team that works to ensure the safe and responsible conduct of biological research at MIT. Will work with faculty members in the registration and review process for biological research; and conduct training for the research and nonresearch communities based on comprehensive assessment and analysis of the risks inherent in the laboratory, animal facility, and throughout the campus. The team also participates in the biannual research laboratory inspection process. The Biosafety officer will become part of the Biosafety Program team that works to ensure the safe and responsible conduct of biological research at MIT.
